The Dominican Republic is undoubtedly one of the loveliest places
in the Caribbean. This part of the Caribbean features some of the
most interesting beaches in the world,
underwater attractions and
very friendly locals. It's no wonder that adult themed resorts can
easily prosper in this country because their ladies are naturally
accommodating.
But aside from the mainland, there are also notable small islands
in this country. These islands provide a glimpse of what the
Dominican Republic used to be before becoming
populated. These small
islands are a paradise that features not only beautiful beaches, but
impressive wildlife as well.
Beata Island
This island is located in the southernmost part of the country.
The nearest mainland province from this island is the Pedernales.
From the mainland to "Isla Beata," tourists
have to travel
7kms by sea. The beach part of the island is in the western end. The
northern shores of the island are mainly mangroves and docking is
almost impossible or
could be dangerous. There are fishermen who
frequent the area and there are also private boats that can be
arranged to visit the island. Overnight stays are not allowed
but a
day on the island should be more than enough to see most of its
natural wonders.
Alto Velo Island
Beata Island is part of an underwater mountain range. Part of that
mountain range is the Alto Velo Island. A very small island, Alto
Velo is more than
10 kilometers from Beata Island. This small island
is actually less than 2 kmē, which might not offer much to
tourists aside from enjoying its beautiful sand.
Catalina Island
This island is very close to the mainland (less than 2 miles)
which means it's very accessible to many tourists. The island is less
than 10 kmē in size and tourists
can easily visit most of the
beach's attractions before the end of the day. Part of the beach is
currently owned by a Cruise ship as this is one of their
destinations.
Other tourists can visit other parts of the island
through private transportation.
Saona Island
This is the most popular island for tourists and is located in the
southeast end of the country. Saona Island is a large,
government-protected land frequented
by tourists. It's often the
choice of destination because of its size (more than 100 kmē)
and ease of transportation. Numerous excursions and private boats
visit
the shores of Saona Island.
Aside from the beautiful beach, tourists can also see the
interesting wildlife on the island. Various species of migratory
birds that often go through the island can
be observed. Some parts of
the island are also a bit steep, which offers a chance for tourists
to enjoy the beauty underwater after a few feet from the shore.
Visiting these islands is relatively easy. But to make sure your
travel to these parts of the country is safe, get in touch with your
travel agency and inform them
that you're interested in visiting
these islands. This will give them ample time to look for the
appropriate transportation. Although visiting these places means
additional
spending, the beauty of these islands is priceless.
