It's always important to bring your communication devices when
traveling to the Dominican Republic, or in any country you visit.
With the
right communication device, you will be able to get in touch
with your friends and family on what's happening with your vacation.
If you're in an adult
themed resort, you should be able to brag with
your friends in real time about your experience with your beautiful
Dominican lady. Before you pack your
mobile phones and laptops, there are some
things related to communications you need to know when you're in the
Dominican Republic:
The Internet
The Internet is still starting to gain in popularity in the
Dominican Republic, but that doesn't mean it's almost non-existent.
There are already numerous
businesses in the Dominican Republic that
focus on Internet connections. If your business relies heavily on the
Internet, you may want to bring your laptop
although wireless
connectivity is not assured in every resort. Not all adult themed
resorts have Internet connections so it’s best to get in touch with
the
resort before traveling.
If your business does not rely heavily on this type of
communication, it's better to visit various Internet shops in the
city. Major cities such as Santo Domingo
and Puerto Plata have
numerous Internet cafes where the Internet can be rented by the hour.
Mobile Phones
There are two ways you can communicate through mobile phones in
the Dominican Republic.
First Option: before you leave home, get in touch with your mobile
phone provider and ask them about international roaming. Many
countries that offer mobile phone
subscriptions should be able to
quote the rates as well as activate international roaming. This will
allow you to keep your current phone number and keep it active during
your trip to the Dominican Republic. This option is very convenient
but this can be very expensive since you will be charged with
international calling rates. You will be charged
even if you're on
the receiving end of the phone call.
Second Option: if you don't have to keep your phone number open
while in the Dominican Republic, you can always purchase a SIM-card
for your mobile phone. However,
you need to make sure that your
mobile phone is GSM based and open-line.
If your mobile phone does not have a SIM-slot, you can rent a
mobile phone or purchase a refurbished mobile phone. A SIM-card will
cost you no less than $10.00. This is highly
recommended if you're
planning to stay in the Dominican Republic for at least two-weeks. A
cheap mobile phone should be good for making local phone calls and
free if you receive
international phone calls.
Shopping for Rates and 3G Connectivity
The best thing about the Dominican Republic in terms of
connectivity is that there are a good number of mobile phone
providers and they are aggressively competing for
subscribers. Shop a
little bit for their rates and check to see if they can provide 3G
connectivity for your mobile phone. Again, know how much you will be
charged per minute
for a 3G connection because it could be very
expensive when you're using international roaming.
